The first bread factory of Hungary has been founded in 1786 in one of the outstanding monuments of the country, Fort Monostor in Komárom.
After the 2003 reconstruction following the withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Hungary the former army meal storage depot proved to be suitable for exhibiting the preservable material of the Baking Industry Requisite Deposit deprived of its exhibition gallery.
Organised by and in association with the Hungarian Bakers’ Princely Order and with the assistance of two vocational schools (Pesti Barnabás of Budapest and Toldi Miklós of Nagykőrös) there are two permanent exhibitions titled „Komiszkenyér” and „HÍR - Traditional Bakery Products” - the latter supported by the Agricultural Marketing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FVM AMC).
Beyond the basic shows every year, on the Saturday closest to July 3 (The Feast of Sarlós Boldogasszony) a new temporary exhibition is opened in the framework of a spectacular and substantial Bread Festival presenting the culinary culture and the bread making and consuming traditions of a specific era.
The temporary shows are open during the opening hours of Fort Monostor.
In attaining the exhibitions Hungarian Bakers’ Princely Order is assisted by museologist- archeologist Emese Számadó, the head of Komárom’s Klapka György Museum. The Order also involves the interns of the increasingly popular vocational camp in the installation of the shows.
The Bread Museum can be visited every day during the opening hours of Fort Monostor from 15 March to the end of November. During the camp period (from the middle of June, the end of school season to Sarlós Boldogasszony Day) the tradition-cultivating presentation of bakery novices is a unique spectacle.
